Only games between two California-based teams playing at the highest level of major college football count toward the MCC standings. The cup is awarded to the first place team in the standings at the end of the year with a minimum of two wins. Conference championships count but bowls do not.
The standings are in winning percentage order with ties broken as follows:
- Total wins
- Head to head record
- Margin of victory over common opponents
- Total margin of victory
